Dave Baker, President
Dave Baker grew up in the Washington, D.C./Maryland area. After graduating from high school, Dave joined the United States Marines during the Vietnam War era. Assigned to the U.S.S. Roosevelt, he sailed the Mediterranean with the U.S. Navy.
After leaving the service with an honorable discharge as a corporal, Dave moved to New York City to attend photographer’s school. Realizing that his interests were elsewhere, he returned to the Washington, D.C. area to explore new opportunities.
Dave met his business partner, Jim Kerr, in the early 1970s. At the time, both he and Jim were working in construction in the D.C. area. They started to work on many side jobs together, including building furniture. When they decided to turn their side jobs into a full-time millwork business, Dave prepared himself for his new role by taking business courses at Prince George’s Community College.
Today, as president of Baker & Kerr, Dave oversees all company operations. With his specialized expertise in estimating, he personally handles the preparation of many of the company’s bid proposals.
Dave has two children and three grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, hiking and, of course, woodworking.
Jim Kerr, Vice President
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Jim Kerr found his passion for woodworking while attending Potomac Senior High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland. To this day, Jim still credits his high school industrial arts teacher as being his most influential mentor in the area of woodworking.
After befriending Dave Baker in the 1970s, Jim discovered that he and Dave had a common interest in developing a woodworking business. They soon became business partners, first trading as Wood N Things. The rest, as they say, is history.
Today, Jim is actively involved in all areas of Baker & Kerr. He’s frequently in the field, working with general contractors. Back at the shop, Jim works closely with our staff, interacting with everyone individually on a daily basis, keeping abreast of current projects and advising on technical issues.
Father to two sons, Jim currently lives in North Beach, Maryland. When not working, he enjoys boating and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.
